Final project for General English..

Our last project is to perform a play. What come to my mind is "10 things i hate about you" movie. It's one of my favourite movie. So, i'm asking my group member either they are agree with my opinion or not. Thanx god, they receive it with open arm. Nothing is more sweet than direct your own play, write the script, and so forth. Now, we are still looking for the apropriate props, you know... what to wear at the prom...,at the party..everything should look perfect during the day...being Kat is not an easy task, some people should hate me, some people have to love me...perhaps, everything will be fine...

Who is Lee Su Kim?

Well, Lee Su Kim, or Prof. Dr.Lee Su Kim is "The forbidden" short story writer in "The Merlion and the hibiscus". She is Associate Professor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Her related field is Intercultural Communication, Second Language Education.Her other academic and prof. qualification are:-

Discuss the roles of women as potrayed in the movie "The Colour purple"

In this story, there are three women with three different character. The three women are Cellie, Shug Avery, and Sofia. Cellie is potrayed as a shy and coward because she is unable to fight what people done to her, but at the end of the story, her character has change to more bold. Shug Avery is portrayed as an attractive character,and have a strong spirit, while Sofia is portrayed as a brave woman. For example, when mayor's wife, Miss Millie, ask Sofia to work with ger as a maid. When Sofia declined with the word, "Hell no", the mayor slap Sofia. When she get mad, she knoking the mayor down.

The colour purple: the changes that Cellie and shug go through

I had watch “The Colour Purple” that was directed by well known director, Steven Spielberg. The main character in this story is Cellie. At first, she seems too weak to fights back what other people doing towards her. For example when her father, Alphonso married her with Albert Johnson she did not protest her father decision. After married, Johnson treat Cellie like a slave, but she’s not fight back. However, everything has change when Shug Avery comes to her life. Avery makes her realize that no one can control her life anymore, and she deserve to make her own decision. . Avery also changes after met with Cellie. She becomes more realistic. From the story, Avery is portrayed as an alcoholic, club singer and lives a ruin life. Until one night when Johnson take her to his home. Avery was drunk at that time. That was a turning point in their relationship. When she discover that Johnson always beat Cellie, she decided to remain at the house to protect her. As time pass by, their relationship become closer and their relationship has changes to lovers. Avery has helped Cellie to search the letter from Cellie sisters. At the end of the story, Avery is married to a man named Grady. Eventually, Cellie met with Nettie, along with her two children.

child abuse, the similarities between the story, why it’s happened, and how to overcome it?

Recently, child abuses cases happened everywhere. we are familiar with adik Nurin Jazlin and adik Sharlinie cases. both are innocent children. "The tragedy of my third eyes" by Suchen Christine Lim is also try to emphasize on child abuse case. In this story, Ping was a lonely children. Her mother was die, and her auntie was taking care of her. She love her grandmother much. Ping was abuse by her auntie. She treat her awfully. She force her to eat, and not taking care of her. Ping learn how to be independent.
However, this story is different from Nurin Jazlin and Sharlinie cases. Their cases are more terrible..

Third eyes refer to when Ping realize everything that happened around her. Her heart is her third eyes.

discus about the style of language in Victoria n her kimono.

In this story, the writer use simple language that can easily understand by the readers. The writer use Manglish which is the combination of English and Malaysian spoken English. The writer also did not use high lexis word which ease the reader to understand the whole story. This story also tell us the importance of knowing foreign language. From the story, the school teacher was saved from execution as his wife able to speaking Japanese and wearing kimono. She revoke that English was a language spoken awfully by the villains in popular Tamil films.

discus about Malaysian English writer, whether it lower than Singaporean English writer or not?

It’s quite bias to say that all Singaporean writer is far more better than Malaysian writer by consider on certain aspect such as their economy, their first language is English and so on. Every people have their own capabilities. Actually, the output of the artwork is depends on who create it. If the story was created by well educated writer, of course the writer will use high lexis word to explain something or express the protagonist or antagonist feeling. We (Malaysian) writer also have numerous of talented writer that have been approved in international stage. However, certain issues is more sensitive in Malaysia rather than in Singapore. For instance, tranvestite issue that was presented by Alfian Sa at in "Bugis". The story is more open and the story also view the identity confusion that happened in both country. It's not about who is better actually, but how we, as an Asian community show our mentality. to be matured or otherwise..

Discus about polygamy

Polygamy hold a stereotype in world community, but, Islam allowed its people to practice polygamy. Polygamy has both negatives and positives effect. Polygamy able to reduce problems related to illegal sex activities.
Somehow, polygamy hailed other problems such as not giving daily needs such as neglected children and first wife need, pay more attention to the younger wife, and unable to be fair to his wives.

Mala and his husband love each other..

Sanker love his wife, this is because he always told Mala to be courteus to him. Mala also love his husband because she never be rude with his husband, and she respect his husband. Eventhough Sanker refuse to have baby this did not means that Sanker did not love his wife. But, he wanted to collect more money so that they can live happily..

My prediction on Mala short story ending..

After read Mala, i found that the story have an open ending type of ending, which is the reader have to predict what will happen at the end of the story.. Well, i predict that at the end of the story,Mala will have her own children, right after Sanker have a lot of money to make sure that he can fulfill his children need, as well as his wife, Mala. At first, he refuse to have a child not because she don't love Mala, but, he want to make sure that he can gift wealth to his family.

The hungry ghost

The narrator search for the continuity after death.

His grandfather doesn’t want to live at hell, and wanted his grandchildren to offer him food, hugging his grave, and burning money for him to spend.

Offering food, hugging grave, and burning money have its meaning. Offering food symbolize giving food to them, so that they will not hungry. While, hugging grave represent family care to the deceased, pray for them, and not left them alone. Burning money symbolize extra money for deceased to spend during their vacation on earth.

I agree with Mason because if I were in Mason place I will confront the same thing as his, especially in the same situation as him. No foods and other need. Sometimes we will feel tension because our deprivation couldn’t be fulfilled. For me, foods and water is a important things because we can’t live without food and water. Besides that, money also part of important thing, because daily activities need money. Nowadays, free item seem impossible because money is everything now.


For me, there are several of thing that I need in life such as, money, provisions, education, and a healthy body and soul. When we had plenty of money, we can buy necessary items. Provision will keep us live. We need to eat so that, our body and soul will keep healthy. Education also important because with education we will feel more confident and think wisely.

Bugis By Alfian Sa at

Bugis is a short story writted by Alfian Sa at who is the famouse Singaporean author.
My lecture had give us a task to predict what will happened after the narrator pull Salmah's hair. Well, i think maybe Sazalie will left her because she had cheating on him, and maybe he will find another girlfriend. She pretend like a good girl by wearing tudung, but the truth is she just pretending. Salmah and the narrator maybe not be a best friend anymore after the incident. It's not easy to forgive someone that ever embarrased us in front of the person that we love, but like people said, time heals everything.. And perhaps, after the incident Salmah will learn that pretending will jeopardize everything, her love, friendship, and her pride.
